Refurbishment of the existing Donut arts centre and construction of a new building was funded by a multi-million pound grant from the Big Lottery Fund. The arts centre is run by Fairplay in partnership with Derbyshire County Council and comprises an outdoor sports centre, art and pottery room, resource library and sensory room.

Aimed at visitors aged 11-25 , including those with disabilities and from disadvantaged areas, the refurbishment of the arts centre also includes a recording studio, digital media and arts facilities, an internet café, chill out area, performance stages and a dance studio.
